Jack-in-the-Box

Sunday, September 28, 2008

I'm running pretty short on time right now, so it's time for a trip to the archives. I honestly can't remember when I did this sculpture, but I'm going to take a wild guess and say it was just barely before college. Anyway, it's based on Jack-in-the-Box, a character from Kurt Busiek's Astro City, which I started reading in high school. The costume was designed by Alex Ross and is still one of my all time favorites. I showed these pics to Dynamic Forces a few years ago, so I hope if they ever decide to do a figurine, they'll remember me.

As you can see, it's not finished, but the overall design was to be popping out of a — you guessed it — jack-in-the-box base.

  1. You really have so much talent in drawing as in modelling.
The pose and the dynamism are very well done, and that doesn't seem simple.

  2. Paulo, you rock! I love the total dynamism - especially the third picture down - that angle shows the movement and thrust. Looks like you used super sculpey. Most of the stuff I did early on (mostly round my Mum & Dad's house) sucks and is an embarrassment.

    Thanks for the blog

  3. Ha! I'm guessing you're a different Kurt Busiek.

  4. Oh! Well thanks for stopping by, Kurt! I grew up on Astro City, not to mention Marvels. Also, thanks for posting this on your blog (and writing great comics... oh yeah, and catapulting Joe Quinones to instant fame! I'm sure I forgot something).
