Although minor figures in this composition, I went ahead and took reference to speed up the process. It's often the most subtle gestures that can be the most difficult. To see the panel in context, as well as additional reference for the more prominent figures, check out Week 70.
Much of the technical reference came from a WWII reference book, GOVERNMENT ISSUE: U.S. Army European Theater of Operations Collector Guide. While a great source for equipment of every kind, for fantastic photos of soldiers in uniform (accompanied by detailed descriptions of the campaigns associated with them) a much better bet is The World War II GI: US Army Uniforms 1941-45 in Color Photographs. The background graphics were mostly found on-line, beginning with the Wikipedia entry on military symbols.
